Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Resource Center: In 2006, NIU was named one of the 100 best campuses for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) students in the nation by the Advocate College Guide for LGBT Students. The LGBT Resource Center supports the developmental process, well-being, academic success, and retention of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or transgender students; increases community awareness and knowledge about sexual orientation and gender identity; promotes a campus community that is inclusive of LGBTQ individuals; and provides resources, programs, and experiences that support and expand student leadership development.

Department Mission: The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Resource Center serves as a vital link where LGBTQ individuals can find a sense of community and everyone can learn about LGBTQ identity and culture. We strive to create an inclusive campus community by providing support services, educational programs, advocacy and opportunities for leadership development.

Student Affairs Mission: In alliance with the educational mission of Northern Illinois University, the Division of Student Affairs creates student learning opportunities beyond the classroom that inspire intellectual, personal, and civic growth for leadership in a diverse and complex world.

The Position: This is a full-time graduate assistantship (20 hours) reporting to the Director of the LGBT Resource Center and assisting with projects designed to enhance the university's services for LGBT students.

Responsibilities: Dependent on the interests and skills of applicants, duties assigned to the position could include:

  • Program Development/Planning: Assisting with development of workshops and programs to enhance student leadership skills; Assisting with development and implementation of educational programming for LGBT History Month, Coming Out Day, LGBT Awareness Month, and other events
  • Program Evaluation: Assisting with evaluation and assessment of programs and services
  • Research: Assisting in benchmarking, researching models for services and other data gathering activities for program and service development
  • Creativity: Contributing to the production of promotional and educational materials and activities to enhance public awareness of and utilization of the Resource Center.
  • Interpersonal Relations: Representing the Resource Center at outreach events, providing assistance to individuals seeking information or services
  • Oral & Written Communication: Communicating clearly, accurately, and professionally in all interactions and materials representing the Resource Center
  • Collaboration: Working with Resource Center staff members and campus and community partners in support of Resource Center goals
  • Organizational Skills: Assisting with administrative tasks, such as mailings, program publicity, data base updates, web page updates, etc.

Requirements:

  • Admitted to NIU's graduate school and enrolled in a graduate course of study.**
  • Preference will be given to graduate students pursuing a degree in Counseling, Adult and Higher Education, but those pursuing in a closely related field or discipline at Northern Illinois University will be considered, as will those with specific LGBT-related experience.
  • In addition to a Graduate Assistant Application Form (available from the Graduate School), applicants should submit a resume and a 1 to 2 page writing sample.

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with students of diverse backgrounds
  • Knowledge of LGBT issues and concerns and an interest in working with LGBT students
  • Ability to work 20 hours per week (including possible evening hours on occasion)
  • Good communication skills

Salary/Compensation for a 9 month, 20 hours per week position include:

  • Start Date: August 16
  • Salary: $1,000 per month
  • Housing in residence hall: no
  • Meal Plan: no
  • Other Benefits: tuition waiver
