Dr. Brett-Genny Janiczek Beemyn

Brett-Genny Janiczek Beemyn is one of the country's leading experts on the experiences of transgender people and the development of transgender-inclusive policies and practices. A transgender individual hirself, Dr. Beemyn has published and spoken extensively on the needs of transgender students and how colleges can address these needs. Hir recent publications include "Trans on Campus: Measuring and Improving the Climate for Transgender Students" in On Campus with Women; "Transgender Issues on Campus" in Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation: Research, Policy, and Personal Perspectives; "Cross Dressing," "Transsexuality," and "Transgender Students" in Youth, Education, and Sexualities: An International Encyclopedia; and "Genderqueer," "Transgender Issues in Education," "Transsexual Autobiography," and "Transgender Issues in the Law" for www.glbtq.com.

In addition, Dr. Beemyn has edited or co-edited five books/journal issues, including Queer Studies: A Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Anthology; Creating a Place for Ourselves: Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Community Histories; and, most recently, a special issue of the Journal of LGBT Youth on "Trans Youth." Ze's current work, written with Dr. Sue Rankin, is The Lives of Transgender People. The book, which is to be published by Columbia University Press, is based on the results of their research—the first large-scale, national study of transgender people in the United States.

Dr. Beemyn is Director of the Stonewall Center at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and a Senior Associate with LGBT Associates of Western Massachusetts, an educational, counseling, and consulting firm specializing in working with transgender people. Ze is also outgoing co-chair of the Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals, a board member and campus consultant for the Transgender Law and Policy Institute, and an associate editor of the Journal of LGBT Youth. Dr. Beemyn holds Master's degrees in American Studies, African American Studies, and Higher Education, and a Ph.D. in African American Studies.
