Q. How do I set
up an advisory board?
A. Many LGBT
Centers are establishing advisory boards to assist with some of
the major decision-making that affects the campus LGBT community.
At UCLA the Center Advisory Board has 24 people who are stakeholders
in the well-being of the campus LGBT community: 6 undergrads, 6
grad students, 2 faculty, 4 staff, 2 alumni, 2 faculty or staff
allies, and 2 student allies. The Advisory Board is the primary
group that participates in the Center's strategic planning where
the vision, mission, operating principles, and goals are developed
and reviewed, and where the three-year action plan is outlined.
Purpose of the Advisory Board:
The purposes of the advisory board are: to provide
advice and input to the LGBT Campus Resource Center Director and
staff on planning, implementation, and operational aspects of the
Center; to assure that the overall planning and implementation is
consistent with the expectations of the Division of Student Affairs;
to advise on the coordination of the activities of the Center within
the context of the University and the greater community; and to
serve as ambassadors for the Center's goals and objectives
Expectations of the Advisory Board:
The Advisory Board is expected to: meet periodically
to provide direction and input into the UCLA LGBT Campus Resource
Center; act as public relations agents for the Center; assist in
developing the UCLA LGBT Center program model; conceive and create
ways for the Center to interact with the University and the greater
community for the enhancement of LGBT students, faculty, staff,
and community; formulate and participate on committees when needed;
participate in activities and events
Procedures for the Advisory Board:
The Advisory Board will meet at least once a quarter,
with meetings scheduled six months in advance. Special meetings
may be called as necessary by the Chair of the Board or by the Director
of UCLA LGBT Center. An agenda will be established prior to each
meeting. Minutes will be taken and circulated to all Advisory Board
members. All written materials regarding or representing the UCLA
LGBT Center or any of its programs must be reviewed by the Director
before duplication and distribution occurs. Membership on the Advisory
Board will be determined by the Director of the UCLA LGBT Center,
with at least 50% of the membership comprised of UCLA students.
