ICE and Creating Change 2016

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 14th, 2016

New York, N.Y. -  We, The Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals, were disappointed to learn that the Creating Change conference initially allowed ICE to enter the conference space as an attendee and presenter.  For many of us, this space has been held as sacred and inclusive, but ICE's inclusion in the conference has shown us otherwise.  The Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals stands in solidarity with undocumented communities and attendees at this conference, including the students and staff that we bring to our conference and support on our campuses.

We support the demands of Familia: Trans Queer Liberation Movement as presented to the National LGBTQ Task Force (http://familiatqlm.org/iceoutofcc/)

  • Include a “Fighting Against Deportations” plenary with trans immigrant leaders;

  • Make space available on the agenda to include more LGBTQ immigrant rights workshops; and,

  • Ensure all LGBTQ undocumented immigrant attendees are supported financially throughout the conference (meals, lodging, registration, travel, etc).

We also encourage our membership to attend UndocuPeers: Liberating Campus Climate for LGBTQ Immigrant Youth #UndocuTrack (Workshop Session 8 · All Audiences)

The combined vision and mission of the Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals is to achieve higher education environments in which lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students, faculty, staff, administrators, and alumni have equity in every respect. Our goals are to support colleagues and develop curriculum to professionally enhance this work; to seek climate improvement on campuses; and to advocate for policy change, program development, and establishment of LGBT Offices/Centers.
