[The following questions still need to
be answered. Members of the Consortium who want to volunteer
to answer one of the remaining questions should write to Chicora
<chicora@uoregon.edu>
specifying which question (or questions) you plan to
undertake. She will be in touch with you regarding due dates,
format, etc.].
- What sorts of spaces do campus LGBT offices
have, and what sort of balance have been struck between being
visible vs. private/safe? Also, how much space do you have,
and how do you use that space? How does your space communicate
openness, safety, collaboration with other units (e.g.., counseling
services, services for disabled students & people of color,
etc.)?
- What foundations, companies, etc. have money
to give to GLBT Centers on campuses? Are there particular sorts
of projects that will and won't get grant funding for LGBT offices?
- Has anyone experimented with a "Friends of the
Center" modeled on the popular Friends of the Library groups?
A paraorganization would open up more opportunities for dedicated
folks and reduce the friction that inevitably arises when too
many people try to make policy. Any ideas on how to make this
work?
- What should be included in a presentation on
LGBT Services to Human Resources representatives on campus?
- A student club here is hoping to start a service
initiative with LGBT youth. Are there any current models of
service/service learning out there specific to LGBT youth?
- Have your LGBT students dialogued with ROTC
students? Was the outcome successful for all? Would you encourage
this kind of exchange?
- Please share the names (and contact info) of
the most valuable, most popular, most stimulating speakers you've
had on your campuses in recent years. I'm primarily interested
in people with current academic positions in any discipline,
but recommendations of others will be valuable.
- How do you handle "public" sex in campus bathroom
issues, without taking a sex-negative stance?
- Is there a a comprehensive "LGBT Issues Training
Trainers" model for use with residence life staffs and other
college/university employees?
- Our undergraduate student organization is in
danger of falling apart this semester. No one is willing to
step forward as President or assume a leadership position. Maintaining
any sort of continuity is a semester to semester struggle. We
need suggestions on how to get LGBT students involved on our
campus. What are some strategies for overcoming student apathy?
Any advice?
- What needs to be considered when trying to promote/insure
inclusion of transgendered persons in your programs and policies?
- We are considering establishing an LGBTQ floor
in the residence halls. Which colleges and universities have
gay-themed housing on their campuses? What models are available?
How well do these programs work? Any pitfalls we should watch
for? What are the major benefits of such a program?
- Does anyone have any other information, resources,
or contacts they can share regarding the connections between
homosexuality, homophobia, heterosexism, et. al. and
college athletics?
- What is the the nature of the LGBT office's
role in student development?
- What is the nature and or extent of the LGBT
office's role in community development?
- Are there any particular legal issues associated
with the running of an LGBT center/office?
- We want to address the college-prep needs of
LGBT high school students with some sort of college fair. Any
suggestions on how to set one up, publicize it, etc.?
- I need outlines or notes for presentations on
topics such as Lesbian/Bi/Gay history and LGBT civil rights
for presentations on my college campus. It would be easier to
just research the local variations and adapt an existing lecture
than to work one up from scratch. Can anyone help me?
- We need suggestions on how to effectively evaluate
the climate on our campus. Any ideas?
- What kind of educational outreach programs are
LGBT Offices/Centers providing for first-year student classes
(e.g., University 101 courses or others which are aimed at freshmen)?
- How do I get my campus to include sexual orientation
in its nondiscrimination policy?
- How do you deal with discrimination against
LGBT students on your campus?
- We want to establish an LGBT student leader
award. We need criteria or protocols for selecting award recipients,
ideally so we can invite students to nominate themselves or
others for consideration.
- Our campus is exploring unisex bathrooms as
an accommodation for transgendered/transitioning students/faculty/staff.
Where can I find some suggestions or examples of existing policies?
- Our housing office/campus is looking for training
programs/resources for training resident assistants on LGBT
issues. Are there any materials and/or ideas out there?
- Our student group wants to change its name/add
queer/etc. What are some of the campus experiences around this
process?
- In the past campuses/organizations have published/read
a list of homosexuals killed in the holocaust. Where can I find
that list?
- Our campus wants to add/develop a policy
that has transgendered/gender identity in our nondiscrimination
policies. What suggestions or example exist?
