Williams College seeks a new Assistant Vice President (AVP) for Institutional Diversity and Equity to join the Office of Institutional Diversity and Equity (OIDE). The Assistant Vice President will possess a deep knowledge of diversity, equity and inclusion matters, and be proficient in advancing efforts positively impacting individuals from groups historically underrepresented or underserved. The AVP will report to the Vice President for Institutional Diversity and Equity who is a member of the college’s senior staff. OIDE, now over a decade old, works to ensure the campus is an inclusive space in which all students, faculty and staff are welcome and excel (thrive) by eliminating harmful bias and discrimination, closing opportunity gaps, and advancing critical conversations and initiatives that promote inclusion, equity, and social justice on campus and beyond. To advance diversity, equity and inclusion in these ways, we collaborate with numerous offices and departments on campus. Our expectation is that the successful candidate will excel at working in a community that is broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, economic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation and religion. In a cover letter, applicants should describe how they will embrace the college’s commitment to fostering an inclusive community, as well as their experience with conflict resolution, investigation, workshop development and facilitation, and working with individuals from historically marginalized or underserved groups.

The scope of the new AVP’s work will be three-fold: to assist in the implementation of the college’s non-discrimination policies, to develop workshops and educational opportunities and facilitate conversations around issues of equity and inclusion, such as bias, inclusion in the workplace and classroom, and to develop and support initiatives centered around diversity, equity and inclusion, including gathering and analyzing data to inform the adoption of new, creative initiatives.

The AVP will join a highly collaborative and driven team and help provide key leadership in building and supporting an inclusive college community. The successful candidate will be:

• Experienced in facilitating conflict resolution processes, including investigations;
• Impartial when needed and able to hold information in confidence as appropriate;
• Able to communicate clearly and accurately about complex and sensitive issues;
• Able to communicate supportively with those who may have experienced trauma or discrimination;
• Able to comprehend complex matters and make decisions exercising good judgment in conformity with existing policies;
• Experienced in policy development and implementation;
• Experienced in developing and facilitating workshops and conversations on topics of inclusion and equity;
• Adept at promoting cultures of respect and inclusion throughout the community;
• Able to lead work that is collaborative across multiple departments and offices;
• Have excellent judgment and impeccable integrity;
• Be reliable;
• A creative thinker; and,
• A life-long learner.


This position is a full-time, year-round appointment. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. A terminal or master’s degree is required, with at least five years of relevant experience. For optimal consideration, submit a resume and cover letter by December 15, 2018. Job Group 2/B.
