Hi all,

I am the LGBTQ Coordinator at American University in our Center for Diversity and Inclusion. We have all-gender housing as an opt-in option on our general housing form. However, we've seen many students who have gender-based accommodations needs that are not heard through that process. Additionally, those needs are not being seen by our disability access center because (obviously) no student should have to submit their gender-based housing request as a disability.

For example, a trans student who is requesting an attached bathroom because they are not comfortable injecting hormones in front of their roommate. Housing/Residence Life doesn't take accommodations requests in their forms because they aren't able to make decisions whether a student should be granted their request. Therefore the student would have to submit their request as a disability to be accommodated.

We want to create a form where students can request those needs through our Center, then we can relay those needs to the Housing office. Have any of you gone through this process? How do you work through housing requests on your campuses?

Thank you for the help!

Hi Anna,

We have a similar option for gender inclusive housing, and students are able to make requests, via our Associate Dean/Director of Housing, who make those determinations in conjunction with myself. For the most part he just makes the decision, unless it is super complicated, situation.

Best,
