Greetings and Hello,

I'm working with our parent and family programs department to create an education session for parents of LGBTQ+ Students. I have my own ideas, but I want to see if there are others at other institutions. I plan to introduce our ally training topics, but I wanted to see if there are other things that may be good specifically for parents.

Hi Joshua,
If you have a local PFLAG chapter, connecting with them may be helpful, or possibly obtaining and using some of their materials that are designed for family members.

We have done a series for parents and families called "Can We Talk?" and found that starting with a sense of why people have come and to make sure we address what they need (plenty of time for Q&A) and participation agreements were helpful. Also I partnered with someone from our counseling center as both back up and to add some perceived expertise for some reluctant folks.

We also have tried the model where students are in one group and parents are in another (siblings got to choose between them) for the beginning conversation and then came back together.

I can share with you the cute poster that my colleague made that was a grid of questions people might ask. Just email me at [email protected]

Hi Joshua,

I've recently experienced a notable track record of overbearing parents. So I think that providing resources and guidance for parents in supporting their students they way they want to be supported can be very helpful.

Feel free to reach out with further questions.

Hope this helps!
