Job Description:
Under the supervision of the Director of Equity and Diversity, the Assistant Director will assist the Director with managing the Office of Equity and Diversity which includes diversity and inclusion activities; the University Women’s Center; the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) Center, the Center for Faith and Spirituality and the Bias Education Response Taskforce. The Assistant Director also serves as the Coordinator of the LGBTQ Center. The Assistant Director of Equity and Diversity will work closely with students, staff, administration, faculty, and others to positively influence the development of a vibrant, inclusive, and affirming campus community that encourages active, responsible citizenship in an increasingly diverse and multicultural environment.

In addition, the Assistant Director organizes, plans, and manages the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer Center and its programs, staff, resources, and services. The Assistant Director creates, develops, and assesses educational, social, cultural and recreational programming, outreach, advocacy, and training efforts to improve campus climate and awareness of LGBTQ issues, and provides leadership opportunities for LGBTQ students. The Assistant Director serves as the University specialist for LGBTQ issues, collaborates with administrators, university departments, faculty members, community organizations, and students to promote safety and social justice initiatives.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist the Director of Equity and Diversity with daily management of the Office of Equity and Diversity including development of mission, strategic plan, budgeting, and supervision of staff (when necessary)
  • Lead the Office of Equity and Diversity in the absence of the Director. Supervises staff and directs the work operations, develops performance standards, makes performance evaluations, provides guidance and counsel to staff and approves personnel actions within the program or unit including promotions, hiring and disciplinary actions in accordance with college policies and state regulations in the Director’s absence.
  • Assist in planning and directing activities for the Office of Equity and Diversity
  • Serve as member of the Crisis, Assessment, Response and Education (CARE) Team to address students of concern and students in crisis
  • Assist in the development and facilitation of programs and training opportunities for the campus community focusing on intersectionality, power and privilege, multi-cultural competency, social justice, and effective ways to support marginalized/underserved students and colleagues
  • Assess campus climate and research national and global issues in order to create programs and information to educate the campus
  • Administer and interpret applicable federal and/or state laws and regulations that impact on the work units and/or programs, and translates them into policies and operating procedures.
  • Compose and prepare communication materials to constituents, and approve and develop public relations materials for the Office of Equity and Diversity and its various centers and programs; including the various websites, brochures, and other marketing materials. Oversees all social media accounts associated with the Office of Equity and Diversity.
  • Responsible for the oversight, development and management of the LGBTQ Center.
  • Responsible for the daily operation of LGBTQ resource center that includes a resource library, student lounge, and multiple office spaces.
  • Develop, interpret, implement, and assess short- and long-term goals and objectives of LGBTQ services, create strategic plans and directions for the LGBTQ Center, and establish necessary policies and procedures in accordance with college and division goals and objectives.
  • Provide mentoring and advising to LGBTQ-identified students in areas of health, career services, academic success, and other areas specific to student development, and provide support, advocacy, and resources to/for LGBTQ and questioning students.
  • Serve as the fiscal agent for LGBTQ Center budget, which includes oversight and financial accountability of programming and staffing budget
  • Hire, train, supervise, develop, and evaluate 1 Program Assistant, 2 Graduate Assistants, 2-4 Graduate Interns/Practicums, 30+ student staff/volunteers for LGBTQ Center
  • Develop, facilitate, and assess discussion groups and clubs based on student interest and identity including but not limited to Men’s Group, Womyn’s Group, Transcending Boundaries, Beyond Binaries, Q-mmunity, Queer Graduate Students, Queer People of Color Group, Montclair Aces, LGBTQ+Athletes, LAMBDA, and Coming Out Group
  • Develop and implement annual LGBTQ Center programs including but not limited to: National Coming Out Day/Coming Out Week, Celebrate Bisexuality Day, Transgender Visibility Week, International Transgender Day of Remembrance, Asexual Awareness Week, World Aids Day/HIV Awareness Week, Ally Appreciation Week, Black History Month, NYC/NJ Pride Celebrations, etc.
  • Coordinate campus-wide LGBTQ support services and resources for the Montclair State community, which includes creating, implementing, and assessing social, cultural, recreational and educational trainings and programs, advocating for individuals facing obstacles, and proactively and actively responding to LGBTQ hate and bias incidents
  • Serve as liaison to faculty regarding academic programming, research opportunities and support, curriculum research and development, conferences and colloquia
  • Advise and assist campus administrators and departments on the development and implementation of policies and procedures regarding LGBTQ issues, resources, and services
  • Chair the LGBTQ Task Force, providing LGBTQ recommendations to the President’s Commission on Affirmative Action Equal Opportunity and Diversity and serve on ad hoc and standing committees as required
  • Oversee strategic vision for the Stonewall Suites LGBTQ Residential Community and develops proposals, plans, and programming for the community in collaboration with Residence Life
  • Assist with the promotion/recruitment, housing selection/assignments, retention, and RA selection/placement
  • Meet weekly with RA of Stonewall Suites and monthly with Community Director
  • Design and facilitate Fall and Spring retreats and assists in assessment initiatives for the Stonewall Community
  • Assist with meditations and disciplinary actions as needed
  • Attend LGBTQ College Fairs with the Office of Admission and participate in recruitment efforts for prospective students
  • Work closely with Alumni Relations and serve as a staff liaison for the LGBTQ Alumni Affinity organization
  • Network with local, state, and national LGBTQ Centers and organizations
  • Develop fundraising activities which can include benefits, planned giving, research and writing of appropriate grant proposals to public and private agencies
  • Coordinate annual Pride Awards and Lavender Graduating Student Ceremony, including the facilitation of the campus-wide awards process
  • Represent the University at conferences, seminars or meetings as required.
  • Initiate and plan conferences, seminars, and workshops on LGBTQ and social justice issues on campus
  • Be available to fulfill work responsibilities outside of established work hours and perform other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Ability to acquire knowledge of the laws and regulations that impact the University.Knowledge of the principles of budget planning, development and administration.
  • Knowledge of the principles of organizational and personnel management.
  • Ability to acquire knowledge of state agencies, federal, state and local governments and private organizations that have a strong working relationship with the department.
  • Ability to assist in the management of the general department, including setting goals, planning and implementing work programs and developing policies and procedures.
  • Ability to speak in public.
  • Ability to supervise and maintain essential records and files.
  • Ability to write reports, letters and other documents, using correct and appropriate language and grammar.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university
  • Diversity education, leadership training skills, and the ability to motivate volunteers
  • Four years of experience with LGBTQ programming, training, and outreach; providing counseling services preferred
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Computer skills and webpage management are highly desired
Salary Range: Commensurate with experience.
