Internships

The Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals Internship Program provides opportunities for graduate students (and students accepted to graduate education programs) to intern over the summer at professionally-staffed campus LGBT resource centers/offices. Interns complete a Consortium Project to contribute to the profession of LGBT resources in higher education and to benefit the host campus.

The Internship Program is supervised by the Consortium Support Services Work Group. You may contact the Internship Coordinator at internship@lgbtcampus.org.

Internship Frequently Asked Questions

What is the deadline for applying for an internship?

Each host campus sets their own deadline for accepting applications and notifying applicants. In general, internship job descriptions are posted in February or March, with final notification of intern selection in April or May.

Will all my expenses be paid during the internship?

Specific compensation packages vary, depending on the resources of the particular institution. Typically the internship includes a stipend, free or affordable housing options, and assistance with future conference attendance costs. Many interns can receive academic credit.

Who will be my site supervisor?

Site supervisors are current Directors of LGBT Centers/Offices at their institutions, with 50% or more of their duties devoted to LGBT resource development. Direct supervision may also be provided by Assistant Directors or Program Coordinators who report to a full-time center Director.

What kinds of applications, reports, or other paperwork must interns complete?

Interns and site supervisors often sign a written agreement stipulating the terms of the commitment (start and end dates, hours of work, compensation, etc). Compensation for the intern's time (whether credit, community service, monetary or "in-kind") is at the discretion of the site supervisor.

I don't have any idea what I would do. What have interns done in the past?

Past intern Projects have included:

  • Studying use of FaceBook as an outreach tool
