Graduate Faculty in Psychology Interested in LGB Issues

In fall 1996, the American Psychological Association's Public Interest Directorate conducted a survey of chairpersons of graduate programs in psychology to gather information about graduate faculty in psychology interested in LGB issues. This survey includes both doctoral and masters only programs and some helpful climate indicators to consider when choosing a program.

CLAG's collection of syllabi

The CUNY-based Center for Lesbian & Gay Studies has collected several examples of syllabi for lesbigay/queer studies courses. They are in the process of posting the their entire syllabi collection -- previously available only via through the mail.

David Barnett's annotated GLB Bibliography

The founder of the Consortium website has created an extensive bibliography of books and a few articles addressing GLB issues: with special attention to health issues/AIDS; gay and lesbian relationships; sexual abuse; sexual compulsivity; and spiritual concerns. Any bibliography ages quickly, so if undertaking a research project, you will need to search online databases.

Homosexuality in History: A Partially Annotated Bibliography

Paul Halsall has arranged his bibliography on the history of homosexuality in all periods according to subject matter. There has been an outpouring of scholarship on lesbian and gay history in the past ten years, and much more is in the pipeline. "Any printed bibliography will date quickly, so if you are undertaking a research project, make sure also to search online databases."

"You're Majoring in WHAT? Coming out, Queerly Academic"

This is a chapter by Terry Dublinski in the book Out & About Campus: Personal Accounts by Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered College Students, edited by Kim Howard and Annie Stevens (2000). Los Angeles: Alyson Publications. List price: $12.95. Terry details his efforts to get a individual major in LGB Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Since we are unaware of any campuses which have an established degree program in LGBT studies, this is certainly a terrific alternative approach!

Bisexual Resource Center

This nonprofit educational organization is based in Boston offers an LGBT glossary of terms, information on starting a support group and many links to sites pertaining to issues of bisexuality.

CLAGS
(Center for Lesbian & Gay Studies)

This is the first & only university-based research center in the US dedicated to the study of historical, cultural, and political issues of vital concern to LGBT individuals. They are also collecting syllabi for lesbigay/queer studies courses. By sponsoring public programs and conferences, offering fellowships to scholars, and functioning as a conduit of information, CLAGS is a national center for promotion of scholarship that fosters social change. CLAGS makes its home at the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York

Center for the Study of Sexual Minorities in the Military

Based at University of California Santa Barbara, the Center's purpose is to create, expand, and institutionalize resources for graduate students and junior and independent scholars who do not have access to resources that their more senior colleagues often enjoy. They offer Graduate Student Travel Grants to help students present completed studies on sexuality at professional conferences, grants to faculty for revision or development of undergraduate syllabi that address sexuality and the military and small grants to scholars who need general research support for projects related to sexuality and the military.

Gender Identity Research and Education Society (GIRES)

GIRES exists to promote and communicate research that improves lives of people affected by gender identity and intersex issues. It aims to initiate, promote and support research needs of those who desire to live and be accepted as a member of the opposite sex; to publish outcomes of such research; and to enable public understanding of these issues and provision of equal treatment by society.

IGLSS -- The Institute for Gay and Lesbian Strategic Studies

Based in Washington D.C., IGLSS is a national independent public policy think tank. In their journal, Angles, the Institute reports findings on issues such as employment discrimination and same-sex marriage. On the website, you'll find the Institute's most current publications as well as opportunities to participate in its work.

Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction

Based at Indiana University, The Kinsey Institute Web site supports interdisciplinary research and the study of human sexuality. The Institute was founded by Dr. Alfred Kinsey in 1947.

LAMBDA Institute of Gay and Lesbian Studies

This Alberta-based organization is a research/education centre for educators, scholars, specialists, students, and other interested persons concerned with gay & lesbian social issues, particularly, multifaceted issues of culture & lifestyle, problems with stability & security, and political & social changes.

National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Policy Institute

The Institute is dedicated to research, policy analysis and strategic projects to advance gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender equality and uniting thought to action by linking the worlds of academia, community activists, and policy makers. The Policy Institute publishes critical research papers that provide a factual backdrop for the work of advocates, develops policy options and proposals on a wide range of public policy issues, and develops new strategies and projects to advance the movement for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) equality. The link is to a list of their publications (and other NGLTF publications).

Steven J. Schochet Center for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Studies

The Schochet Center at the University of Minnesota aims to enhance knowledge about GLBT lives in three interconnected foci: 1) academic - interdisciplinary GLBT studies; 2) community - interactive community events and the participation of community scholars; and 3) historical - the creation of an Archive in association with the UMN Libraries that reflects GLBT life and history locally and nationally.

Australian Lesbian and Gay Archives

This archive was stablished in 1978 to recover and preserve any materials that record the lives & experiences of lesbian women and gay men in Australia.

Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives

Collects and maintains information and materials relating to the gay and lesbian movement in Canada and elsewhere, and makes holdings available to the public for the purpose of education and research.

Cornell University's Human Sexuality Collection

This collection seeks to preserve and make accessible primary sources that document historical shifts in the social construction of sexuality, with a focus on U.S. lesbian and gay history and the politics of pornography. The core of the Collection is from the Mariposa Education and Research Foundation, whose members were concerned gay history was being forgotten.

Gerber/Hart Library

Founded in 1981 in Chicago, Gerber/Hart Library is the Midwest's largest gay, lesbian and bisexual circulating library, archives and resource center. In addition to their collections, Gerber/Hart is a vital community resource offering a wide range of cultural and educational programs aimed at the goal of dispelling homophobia through knowledge.

Hall-Carpenter Archives

The collections assembled by this London-based archive are a resource for the study of gay activism in Britain following the publication of the Wolfenden Report in 1958. The archive was closed in 1989 and the collections distributed to three sites.

James C. Hormel Gay and Lesbian Center, San Francisco Public Library

Materials in the Center include a core reference collection, non-circulating new and historical books, current issues of over two-dozen periodicals, and changing exhibitions. Most of the materials in the GLC collection are non-circulating, meaning that they are to be used in the San Francisco Public Library.

June L. Mazer Lesbian Collection

This collection covers almost a century of lesbian artwork, manuscripts, books, records, newspapers, magazines, photographs, games, organizational papers, tapes, letters, scrapbooks, clothing, and flyers.

Lavender Legacies Lesbian and Gay Archives

Society of American Archivists' Lesbian & Gay Archives Roundtable has prepared the first formal and comprehensive guide to primary source material relating to the history and culture of LGBT people held by repositories in North America.

Lesbian Herstory Archives

The Lesbian Herstory Archives in Brooklyn, NY exists to gather and preserve records of Lesbian lives and activities so that future generations will have ready access to materials relevant to their lives and enable us to analyze and reevaluate the Lesbian experience. They strive collect and preserve any materials that are relevant to the lives and experiences of Lesbians: books, magazines, journals, news clippings (from establishment, Feminist or Lesbian media), bibliographies, photos, historical information, tapes, films, diaries, oral histories, poetry and prose, biographies, autobiographies, notices of events, posters, graphics, and other memorabilia.

Lesbian Legacy Collection (archives and library)

At the One Institute International Gay and Lesbian Archives in LA, this site is edited and maintained by Yolanda Retter, MLS, Lesbian historian and ONE Institute librarian. Their goal is to locate, gather, organize, preserve and make accessible materials in any medium, from any time place and location, that are specific to or related to lesbian history, with special commitment to gather lesbians of color materials and images of lesbian history.

Martin B. Duberman Papers, 1917-1992

Housed at the New York Public Library, the collection includes historian Martin Duberman's personal and professional correspondence from the 1930s-1979, documenting his academic career and theatrical activities.

ONE Institute International Gay & Lesbian Archives

Based in Los Angeles, ONE Institute is an independent, not-for-profit educational institution which houses the world's largest research library on GLBT heritage and concerns. Formed in 1952, ONE is the oldest ongoing Gay/Lesbian organization in the Western Hemisphere

Twice Blessed: Jewish GLBT Archives On-Line

The Judaica Collection of the One Institute

University of Minnesota Libraries:
Jean-Nickolaus Tretter Collection in Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Studies.

The U. of Minnesota Libraries agreed to accept Jean-Nickolaus Tretter's donation of his collection in gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) Studies. The collection will be housed by the Libraries in a yet to be determined location. The University has agreed to accept the collection in its entirety and provide for its preservation, conservation and accessibility to scholars and the GLBT community at large. Tretter has a collection larger than any other libraries or archives in the area. He has collected GLBT materials since 1972 and has accumulated over 10,000 items including books, buttons, political banners, t-shirts, photos and documents.

University of Western Ontario's Research Facility for Lesbian and Gay Studies

This facility was established in November, 1997 to promote and advance interdisciplinary scholarship in this field. It combines the Pride Library (including a listing of books in 10 areas) with the Hudler Archives (which contains "Fond HALO" -- a donation of materials from the Homophile Association of London Ontario)

Professional Caucuses/Organizations

American College Personnel Association Standing Committee on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Awareness

The Standing Committee has been a strong voice within ACPA since 1985. Its work includes a Domestic Partners Project and a National Resource Clearinghouse plus efforts to educate the general membership of ACPA to increase their awareness of issues facing LGBT persons; to work to eliminate overt and covert oppression of LGBT persons within ACPA and on college and university campuses; and to protect and advocate for the basic human rights of LGBT students and colleagues.

The American Psychological Association's Division 44: The Society for the Psychological Study of LGB Issues

Offers a variety of information on their site including a piece on academic climate for LGB students in Psychology, an internalized homophobia scale for Lesbians, and the Malyon-Smith Scholarship Award for grad students in psychology.

GLBT Alliance in Social and Personality (GASP)

A nonprofit group seeking to provide social support and professional information to GLBT students and faculty in social & personality psychology and their heterosexual allies.

Committee on the Status of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and the Transgendered (LGBT) in the Profession of the American Political Science Association

This principal association of lesbians and gay men within the American Political Science Association offers an arena for presentation of research on the interaction of sexual identity, theory and political behavior. The Committee assesses the status of LGBT scholars in the profession, advances research on LGBT issues, develops curriculum materials, and works to insure full participation for LGBT political scientists in the Association. Their site offers a Curricular Guide to Gay/Lesbian/Queer Studies.

National Association of Student Personnel Administrators' GLBT Issues Knowledge Community

This site offers information on the Network, their newsletter, leaders, mailing list, domestic partner information, safe space program information, and career services information. They also offer a list of links related to NASPA and to LGBT sites.

National Organization of Gay and Lesbian Scientists and Technical Professionals

NOGLSTP is a national organization of GLBT people employed or interested in scientific or high technology fields. Its goals include dialogue with professional organizations, disseminating information, improving its members employment & professional environments, opposing anti-queer discrimination & stereotypes, educating the queer, scientific, and general communities, and fostering intercity contacts among its members.

National Women's Studies Association

NWSA supports and promotes feminist/ womanist teaching, learning, research, and professional and community service at the pre-K through post-secondary levels and serves as a locus of information about the interdisciplinary field of Women's Studies for those outside the profession. NWSA publishes a newsletter, the quarterly NWSA Journal and other publications

Sociologists' Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,
and Transgendered Caucus

The Caucus works to encourage unprejudiced sociological research on lesbians and gay men and their social institutions; to provide a forum for current research, teaching methods and materials, and professional issues relevant to homosexuality; to monitor antigay ideologies in the distribution of sociological knowledge and to investigate practices oppressive to lesbians and gay men; to oppose discrimination against gay and lesbian sociologists in employment, promotion, tenure, and research situations; and to maintain a social support network among its members.

Society for Lesbian and Gay Philosophy

The Society for Lesbian and Gay Philosophy was founded in 1988 to promote philosophical inquiry into lesbian and gay issues. It sponsors programs on important historical and contemporary topics, held in conjunction with the professional meetings of the American Philosophical Association. The Society is concerned with matters related to professional standing of its members, including hiring, promotion, and tenure and works to increase the presence of lesbian and gay issues in college and university curricula. The Society publishes a biannual newsletter and provides a forum for both serious discussion and friendly interchange.

United States Student Association's
National Lesbian, Gay, & Bisexual Student Caucus

USSA's NLGBSC offers lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth an opportunity to gain support, develop skills and confidence to meet the challenge of building a more inclusive world. NLGBSC holds several meetings a year--all of them are open to any interested LGBT students.

International Journal of Transgenderism

The IJT is peer reviewed, published quarterly and updated with new articles during the quarter. Free access to the journal's articles is available on-line.

Matrices: A Lesbian & Lesbian Feminist Research and Network Newsletter

This publication aims to enhance communication and networking among those interested in lesbian scholarship. The website includes a table of contents and sample articles from issues from 1995 and 1996. The site was last updated in May of 1996.

National Journal of Sexual Orientation Law

This is the first on-line law journal in the country and the second devoted exclusively to legal issues affecting lesbians, gay men and bisexuals.

Sapphic Ink: a lesbian literary journal

This journal "temporarily" ceased publication and may not resume. This site has Volume 1, Issue 4 available to read (fiction, poetry, book reviews)

Stanford Masque

Gender and Sexuality

This long page lists unannotated links which address gender studies and queer studies, with a particular focus upon discussions of sex, gender, sexual identity and sexuality in cultural practices. It is part of eServer.org which looks at collections in the Arts and Humanities.

This site is a good starting point for social sciences scholars who are interested in finding out more information about queer studies. It lists monographs as well as online resources in anthropology, education, history, law, psychology, social work and sociology.

InforM's Sexual Orientation Database at University of Maryland

Site includes announcements of openings, job opportunities, grants, etc.; bibliographies; calls for papers; conference announcements; a listing of email groups devoted to LGB/ queer issues; film reviews; legislative issues; academic papers, essays, and poetry; and syllabi.

The Lesbian History Project

This collection was compiled by Yolanda Retter to provide access to lesbian history on the internet and to support efforts to gather, to record, to publicize and to preserve work on lesbian history. It is focused on assisting researchers to locate primary source materials; it proposes to create dialogues between academic scholars and community scholars through sharing of resources and knowledge.

International Perspectives

This web page is designed to emphasize international perspectives on reducing heterosexism. They want to hear from people in many different countries, and from every continent, who can give others the benefit of their knowledge, to write of their own experiences and direct understanding of strategies and techniques that have been successful in reducing heterosexist prejudice, institutionalized discrimination, and homophobic violence in their culture. Sexual Orientation: Science, Education, and Policy

This site features work by Dr. Gregory Herek - a noted authority on antigay prejudice (or homophobia), hate crimes, and AIDS stigma - and his Northern California Community Research Group at the University of California, Davis. It provides factual information about sexual orientation and HIV/AIDS to promote the use of scientific knowledge for education and enlightened public policy.
