Q: I need to conduct workshops and training
seminars on my campus. Can anyone share their designs and handouts
with me?
A: Here are a couple of workshop designs developed
and readily adapted for various populations. Much of the supportive
material (handouts, lecture material) is included with the designs.
These resources are intended for use by experienced facilitators
who can gauge what is appropriate and inappropriate for particular
populations. You should adapt any exercise so that it better fits
your group's needs.

These two designs were compiled by Dr. David Barnett
(former director of the Univ of Illinois at Chicago's Office of
GLBT Concerns). Dr. Barnett may now be reached at davidcbarnett@earthlink.net.
If other people want to share their workshop designs
here, please contact our webmaster (webmaster@lgbtcampus.org).
Consider checking out this
collection of exercises collected by Jason Fleetwood on his
personal website. You might be able to adapt some of these tools
for use on your campus.
Do you want to attend a training program for trainers? Consider
one of these options. The Social Justice Training Institute (in Boston and Visions
both offer outstanding in-depth trainings that are valuable for
trainers. NCBI--the National Coalition Building Institute--has a
three-day train-the-trainer workshop. Check them out at www.ncbi.org
and click on "Campus Programs. ACUI has a STOP THE HATE! Campus
Hate Crime Prevention Train the Trainer Program. Check out info
online at www.acuiweb.org.
Finally, at the annual ACPA (American College Personnel Association)
national meeting, their Standing
Committee on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Awareness
as well as other units of the association, offer a wide selection
of programs. Many of these are essentially 75 minute train-the-trainer
sort of programs that one could adapt for use on your own campus.
While the content is not predictable from year to year, the quality
is usually quite high and many people have successfully used material
shared at these meetings in their own work. You might also find
similar presentations at NASPA and at NGLTF's Creating Change conferences.
