Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

For Psychologists:
A Ph.D./Psy.D. (or foreign equivalent) from an APA-accredited clinical or counseling psychology program and completion of an APA-accredited pre-doctoral internship (and obtain NY State licensure within one (1) year of start date).



For Social Workers: A Master’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher degree) in Social Work with a specialization in clinical social work, clinical practice or mental health, and possession of state licensure (LMSW) and have one (1) year of postgraduate clinical mental health work experience.



For Licensed Mental Health Counselors: The minimum requirement is a Master’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher degree) in Mental Health Counseling degree or a related discipline, and possession of a NY State license in mental health counseling (LMHC).



Preferred Qualifications:

Previous work experience in a University or college mental health setting. Experience providing group psychotherapy and risk assessment in an outpatient treatment setting. Training and experience conducting workshops and/or outreach programming on depression/suicide prevention. Electronic medical record keeping experience with programs such as Medicat, Point and Click, and/or Titanium. Experience supervising and/or teaching practicum students. Proficiency in spoken and/or written languages other than English.



Brief Description of Duties:

This position will provide short-term individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, prevention and outreach services to undergraduate and graduate students with expertise in the impact of marginalized identities, experiences of inequality, and experiences of oppression and privilege on mental health. Specifically, we are looking for a licensed therapist who has clinical experience with students of color, first-generation, low income, international, and LGBTQ* college students. Therefore, the selected applicant must have demonstrated multicultural competence in mental health service provision.



The successful incumbent will have excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, exercising strong organizational and time-management skills with exceptional attention to detail. Essential for this role is the adeptness to work independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem-solving.


  • Provide initial consults, crisis intervention, individual and group psychotherapy, and referral on a confidential basis to students with emphasis on multicultural focus in the provision of services (e.g., the incumbent is expected to be keenly sensitive to issues of gender, culture, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability status, socioeconomic status, and intersecting identity variables and to be skilled with techniques for counseling students with diverse backgrounds). Maintain timely, accurate clinical documentation to meet NY, federal (HIPAA), accreditation standards, and CAPS Chart Audit policies and procedures.
  • Maintain active involvement in university-wide efforts to enhance diversity and build an inclusive community through the University’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion plan. Serve as primary liaison to the Office of Multicultural Affairs and student organizations and groups representing underserved and marginalized groups. Function as a consultant to faculty, staff, and other units on campus regarding student concerns and student distress.
  • Provide clinical supervision for trainees (post-docs, interns in an APA-accredited internship program and other trainees (psychology practicum students, social work interns). Participate in Training Committee meetings and contribute to efforts to maintain and improve training programs at CAPS; complete evaluations of trainees in a timely manner.
  • Participate in efforts to maintain and improve the quality of services at CAPS; attend and contribute to staff-wide training and meetings and Clinical Services meetings on a regular basis.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.


Special Notes:

This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption. This position serves all campuses including West, East (HSC) and Southampton campus locations and satellite offices.
