Amherst College invites applications for the Director, Women’s and Gender Center position. The Director, Women’s and Gender Center is a full time, year round position, job group and level PT-3. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Diversity & Inclusion, the Director oversees staffing, day-to-day operations, and programming of the Women’s and Gender Center and supports the overall mission of the Diversity & Inclusion Division. The Center serves as an important resource to the campus community in building and supporting gender-focused initiatives and student engagement. The Director works in collaboration with the Multicultural Resource Center, Queer Resource Center, Campus Diversity & Student Leadership Office, Center for International Student Engagement, among other campus partners including the Office of Student Affairs through educational, social, and cultural programming that centers and affirms women, transgender and nonbinary identities, and the work of gender equity on campus. The Director works primarily to support women students at Amherst College, while also serving as a resource for the entire campus community on topics related to gender, gender identity, gender equity, men and masculinities, and identity. The Women’s and Gender Center works intentionally to serve women, femme-identified students, survivors of sexual violence, and nonbinary, gender fluid, and genderqueer students, centering the experiences of women of color and the intersections of race, class, ability, etc. In addition, the Director serves as a programming resource for gender-based groups.

The Director takes appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participates in College’s efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.

Key Responsibilities

Management
  • Management of the day-to-day operations of the Women’s and Gender Center
  • Provide functional supervision of the Administrative Assistant for the Resource Centers
  • Provide co-supervision of the Gender and Sexuality Education Specialist
  • Hire, train and supervise student employees
  • Hire, train and supervise summer undergraduate intern
  • Gather data and prepare annual reports
  • Budget planning and monitoring of expenditures
  • Manage Center website and other forms of social media

Program Planning
  • Develop and deliver programs that support the intellectual and professional achievement of women students to deepen the understanding of gender of community members
  • Promote faculty, staff, alumni, and community involvement through intellectual, social, and cultural programs that focus on gender, gender equity, and inclusion
  • Create and deliver trainings for staff and faculty that focus on gender, gender equity, and inclusion
  • Assist in the promotion and integration of engagement, mentorship, and leadership programs in collaboration with campus partners
  • Serve as a programming resource to gender-based student groups

Collaboration
  • Serve as a resource to and work collaboratively with campus offices and five-college campuses
  • As a member of the Resource Center Team work to co-create, develop, and implement programs, resources, and services that highlight the intersections of identity and community
  • Co-develop the Resource Center’s Social Justice Leadership program for first-year orientation
  • Serve on campus-wide committees and working groups as needed
  • Implement, in collaboration with campus partners, policies directly connected to the women and trans and nonbinary identities, as well as those directly related to gender and equity
  • Co-create and facilitate campus wide programming for the Office of Diversity & Inclusion

Qualifications

Required
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of 3-5 years related experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, interpersonal, time management, and organizational skills
  • Commitment to a student-centered approach and building relationships with historically and presently marginalized students
  • Commitment to a student centered approach and building relationships with students of all genders
  • Ability to work both independently and creatively within established guidelines, while at the same time functioning as a member of a team
  • Experience facilitating diversity trainings and workshop presentations
  • Database experience, proficient in MS Access, Excel, and Word; and ability to learn new software
  • Able to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as needed

Preferred
  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Women’s Studies, Sexuality Studies, Gender Studies, Sociology, Social Justice Education, Higher Education, or related field
  • Knowledge of issues and topics affecting women on college campuses and experience in addressing those issues
  • Knowledge of issues and topics related to gender and gender identity, masculinity, femininity, and trans and nonbinary identities on college campuses and experience addressing those issues
  • Understanding of student development theory, diverse populations
  • Experience working with budgeting practices
  • Experience in developing, leading and administering programs focused on gender and gender equity, intersectionality, and gender-related needs of all students
