Position Description

Amherst College invites applications for the Gender and Sexuality Specialist position. The position is a part-time, 30 hour per week position at a pay rate of $16 per hour. The Gender and Sexuality Specialist works directly with the Women’s and Gender Center (WGC) and the Queer Resource Center (QRC) to co-create and support the WGC & QRC’s educational and social programs; assist in the coordination and facilitation of topics centering the intersections of gender, sexuality, and the other salient identities; gain practical experience working with students holding marginalized gender and sexual identities of color in higher education. This position works directly with the Directors and student staffs of the WGC and QRC to increase student involvement in the centers and to enhance students’ understanding of gender, sexuality, intersectionality, community building, and leadership on the collegiate level and beyond. The specialist takes appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participates in the College’s efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.

Key Responsibilities


Programming:
  • Develop and deliver educational and social programs that align with the QRC & WGC mission and vision in collaboration with the Directors and student staff.
  • Coordinate selected QRC & WGC ongoing programs.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of annual center programs including Reproductive Justice Week, Queer/Trans History Month, Trans Empowerment Week, Womxn’s History Month, and Pride Week.
  • Manage the QRC & WGC programmatic calendar and program outreach.
  • Assist with outreach events and open houses, including Diversity Open Houses, Meet-n-Greets, OD&I BBQ, Mammoth Week events, Senior Celebration, Resource Center Team Staff Appreciation, etc.

Training, Education, and Resource Development:
  • Co-design QRC & WGC curriculum and facilitate trainings/workshops, centering: Health Masculinities, Queer and Trans Identity, Intersectional Feminism, Sexual Health, Anti-oppression/ Anti-violence, etc.
  • Co-create and facilitate Resource Center Team (WGC, MRC, QRC, CDSL, & CISE) student staff trainings and QRC & WGC in-services.
  • Implement and collect assessment data for QRC & WGC programming and workshops to track attendance, student feedback, and impact.
  • Support the Social Justice and Leadership LEAP program.
  • Supervise student staff in the development of resources and services that QRC & WGC provides (pamphlets, website, social media, etc.)

Supervision of Student Staff:
  • Support and mentor student staff, including direct supervision of the student program coordinators.
  • Work with student to facilitate weekly staff meetings.
  • Meet with student staff to plan and assign duties as needed.

Qualifications

Required:
  • Bachelor's in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Feminist Studies, Queer Studies, Trans Studies, Ethnic Studies, Sociology, Social Work, Education, or related fields that center gender and sexuality; or four years of related work experience will be considered in lieu of a degree
  • Understanding of and interest in supporting diverse student communities in higher education, particularly with those who hold marginalized gender and sexual identities
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication, time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently and collaboratively
  • Available to work programs/activities outside normal working hours
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and/or Google Suite for Education.

Preferred:
  • Masters with a focus in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Feminist Studies, Queer Studies, Trans Studies, Ethnic Studies, Higher Education, Social Justice, Sociology, Social Work, Community Organizing, Administrative Leadership, and/or related field
  • Experience with Adobe, Publisher, Canva, or related software
  • Experience with Social Media, including but limited to: facebook, twitter, tumblr, instagram, snapchat, etc.
