APPOINTMENT: 2018-2019 Academic Year (September 2018- July 2019)
OFFICE HOURS: 1700 Hours over Academic Year (Approx. 40 Hours per week, including some nights and weekends.)
POSITION PURPOSE: The Cross Cultural Centers AmeriCorps VIP Member(s) will primarily assist and support volunteer infrastructure building, project management, community outreach, and assessment efforts. Situated within the PRIDE Center and reporting to the Lead Coordinator of LGBTQ+ Initiatives, the service member will assist with the day-to-day operation of the center, as well as plan, coordinate, or facilitate student leadership development among paid student staff, volunteers, and intern/practicum students in the areas of education and advocacy, core programs & signature events, and special projects within contextual education. VIP members will increase the number of high-value (skilled and corporate) volunteers providing needed advocacy services for underrepresented sexuality and gender populations on campus. VIP members work as a part of the center’s professional team to coordinate volunteer programs and to coach and support high-value volunteers.
PRIDE CENTER MISSION STATEMENT: The PRIDE Center, situated in the Cross Cultural Centers unit, aims to be a diverse, open and public touchstone for all members of the California Polytechnic State University community to explore issues of sexual and gender identities, practices, and politics. It develops student leadership, builds workplace equity, promotes academic excellence through contextual education, and provides a variety of community resources. The PRIDE Center educates, advocates, and supports individuals of all genders and sexualities by providing intentional and intersectional learning opportunities through community building on and off campus. The PRIDE Center sustains and develops visibility, a sense of community, and knowledge of our diverse and queer culture.
AMERICORPS VIP PROGRAM:
Nationally, AmeriCorps is known as the domestic PeaceCorps and provides a huge array of services to those in need. The AmeriCorps Volunteer Infrastructure Project (VIP) is designed to address the significant challenges faced by California communities. Through the program, teams of AmeriCorps members are placed in communities to develop volunteer programs, harnessing the desire to serve to directly impact communities in need. Specifically, these non-profits focus on providing services to children and families.
General Responsibilities
TRAINING: Attend and participate in AmeriCorps cohort trainings and service days, CCC/PRIDE Center weekly staff meetings, and attend Dean of Students trainings
OFFICE: Maintain forty (40) office hours per week (which include staff meeting times), including some nights and weekends
- Meet with student staff, volunteers, and intern/practicum students for project updates and assignments
- Perform administrative duties like photocopying, typing, data entry, and student relations
- Maintain event planning and budgetary documentation in collaboration with the Graduate Assistant
- General support for Lead Coordinator and CCC team.
COMMUNICATION:
- Compose and maintain correspondence on progress and activities
- Collaborate with professional staff and student assistants in the production and execution of CCC events
- Aid in the production marketing and advertising material for dialogues and events including the creation of fliers, calendar events, newsletter notices, social media posts, and promotional material
- Submit reports and a year-end legacy binder for future development of the Cross Cultural Centers
NETWORKING:
- Develop relationships and serve as an ambassador to campus and community partners
- Assist Lead Coordinator in development and fund raising ventures with community partners and alumni
PROGRAMMING:
- Provide project management for PRIDE Center core programs and signature events
- Assist with managing the programs and services of each constituent center
- Organize and facilitate socials, events, trainings, and retreats
- Identify and develop leadership opportunities for students in the PRIDE Center
- Mentor and support student assistants, intern/practicum students, and volunteers within the PRIDE Center
OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED
Academic Requirements
- Must hold a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution of higher education
- Must meet all requirements for national service through the AmeriCorps VIP Program
- Must have a flexible schedule (some weekends and evenings required)
Required Qualifications
- Ability to understand, articulate, and learn issues of social justice and cultural competency, especially those affecting sexual and gender minorities
- Ability to work within the philosophy, mission, and purpose of the Cross Cultural Centers
- Have awareness on issues affecting underrepresented communities and willingness to learn more
- Strong interpersonal communication skills
- Demonstrated commitment and interest in intersectional pro-women identifying activities and diversity issues
- Self-initiated with good follow-through
- Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, multi-task, and manage time effectively
- Passion for working with underrepresented population and social justice related issues
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in student leadership and involvement and/or LGBTQ+ support services
- Event or programming experience
- Previous or current membership in a culturally or social justice based student organization
- Passion for working with underrepresented population and social justice related issues
About AmeriCorps

- Members receive a living allowance of $15,500, paid twice monthly in equal installments throughout the term of service.
- Upon successful completion of AmeriCorps service, members become eligible for an education award (appx. $5,800) that can be used to pay for college and some work training programs or to repay outstanding student loans.
- Members are eligible for health insurance and subsidized child-care for the length of their service term.
