The Women’s Center for Gender Justice is a safe space for all students and their allies and is deeply committed to supporting student diversity at a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI).

Job Description
The Women’s Center for Gender Justice at John Jay College seeks a part-time College Assistant to develop and implement a range of programs for LGBTQ+ and gender-nonconforming students. The LGBTQ+ Coordinator will develop a programming calendar for the academic year, support the LGBTQ & Allies Student Club, plan campus events, and liaison with off-campus organizations to develop student resources. In addition, the College Assistant will coordinate JJay’s LGBTQ Taskforce, an advocacy group comprised of students, staff, and faculty committed to improving LGBTQ+ experiences on campus.

General Responsibilities
  • Implement programming that supports the LGBTQ+ student community, including organizing campus events, submitting facilities work orders, reserving campus spaces, and developing advertising materials.
  • Liaison with campus groups to survey and respond to LGBTQ+ and gender-nonconforming student needs.
  • Outreach to academic departments to develop co-curricular events.
  • Manage LGBTQ+ Unit budget and paperwork, including the collection of relevant budget information, the preparation of contractual paperwork and check requests, and the proper follow-through on payment processes. Training will be provided in these areas.
  • Maintain records of LGBTQ+ programming and outreach data: collect and compile sign-in sheets and program surveys, code data using Microsoft Excel, create reports to show LGBTQ+ student services.
  • Develop LGBTQ+ outreach efforts, including social media, website, program publicity, and tabling.
  • Related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have a self-starter attitude, will be able to work responsibly and independently after initial training, and will exhibit a strong commitment to LGBTQ+ rights and gender justice organizing, ideally with communities facing intersectional issues of race and class. The candidate must be gregarious and community oriented and have well developed organizational skills and strong writing abilities. The candidate must be able to work with people from diverse backgrounds to foster an inclusive community for students, regardless of socioeconomic status, culture, religion, sexual orientation, gender expression, race, nationality, age, and ability.

Minimum requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree, with at least a year’s experience with LGBTQ+ advocacy work.
  • Familiarity with LGBTQ+ community needs and resources.
  • Experience in designing promotional and informational materials.
  • Experience with social media outreach, such as Snapchat, Twitter, and Instagram.

Application
Interested candidates should send their resume and cover letter to Erin Thompson, Faculty Director of the Women’s Center for Gender Justice, at [email protected], with the subject heading: LGBTQ+ Program Coordinator.
