Organizational Unit Overview
The Division of Student Affairs actively supports the University’s mission of education, research, and service by providing comprehensive programs and services to assist each student in developing intellectually, socially, morally, and culturally. The Division anticipates students’ developmental needs throughout their collegiate experiences and promotes student development by fostering a community of learning, which encourages individual student involvement and participation. The Department of Intercultural Affairs is committed to cultivating a transformative and culturally competent community centered on inter- and intra-cultural learning. Through collaboration across the ECU campus, the local community, the state, and the region, Intercultural Affairs develops co-curricular programs and services that facilitate cross-cultural dialogue, promotes cultural competency development, and engages the community in reflective experiences which encourage self-exploration and challenges bias of race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, religion, sexual orientation, disability, social class, or other distinctions. Intercultural Affairs includes five areas: Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement, Lucille Gorham Intergenerational Community Center, Women and Gender Office, Ledonia Wright Cultural Center, and Dr. Jesse Peel LGBTQ Center. The Department of Intercultural Affairs (IA) is supported by the Student Involvement and Leadership (SIL) unit within East Carolina University’s Division of Student Affairs. SIL enhances the educational experience for all students by helping to build a sense of campus community through a wide variety of programs and services for individuals and student groups. Through a broad range of co-curricular, cultural, educational, recreational, and social programs, SIL supports the university’s commitments of student success, public service, and regional transformation. The unit is composed of five departments: Campus Recreation and Wellness, Student Activities and Organizations, Greek Life, Intercultural Affairs, and Student Centers.

The Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center provides support and a sense of community for students, faculty, staff, and alumni of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions. We foster student leadership, as well as personal, academic, and professional growth, through volunteer opportunities and collaborative partnerships across campus. The Peel LGBTQ Center offers a safe and welcoming environment that promotes understanding, acceptance, and visibility of the LGBTQ community through a comprehensive range of intersectional educational programming and advocacy services.

Job Duties
The Assistant Director works as a member of the team in Intercultural Affairs and focuses specifically on enhancing the quality of life of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer students and increasing the ECU community’s awareness, understanding, and acceptance of its LGBTQ members. The position coordinates and facilitates two of the LGBTQ Center’s leadership development programs for students: the LGBTQ Center Assistants and the LGBTQ Student Panels. The Assistant Director will lead the Pirate Ally training program for ECU’s student population and facilitate the weekly Coffee House program. This position will aid in the holistic development of the ECU student by developing, planning, promoting, staffing, and assessing a wide range of diverse events/programs for the campus community. This position will also promote student learning objectives in all programs and services that are provided within Intercultural Affairs and Student Involvement and Leadership. The Assistant Director reports to the Senior Associate Director.

The Assistant Director will work closely with the Senior Associate Director and students actively involved in the Peel LGBTQ Center to maintain existing programming and initiatives, as well as anticipating future needs for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and prospective students and their families. The Assistant Director will focus on the visibility and awareness of the Peel LGBTQ Center through use of all social media platforms and will represent the Center as needed at campus and community events.

This is a professional position with responsibilities having a direct impact on the quality of students’ educational experiences and interaction with their peers, as well as the campus community at large. Additionally, this position requires a strong knowledge of university budgetary practices, student development, leadership education, and community engagement. Problem-solving skills, independent decision-making, and critical thinking skills are necessary.

Minimum Education/Experience
Master’s degree in leadership education, college student affairs, higher education administration, student personnel, counseling, sociology, social work, anthropology, gender studies, or related field required. Two years relevant experience in higher education setting working directly with students or equivalent private sector experience. Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal), organizational skills, the ability to manage multiple priorities, and the willingness to communicate and work effectively with diverse populations. Ability/willingness to work some nights/weekends; commitment to teamwork, partnership best practices, and collaboration.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Strong technical background in social media would be an asset for the successful candidate. Experience facilitating personal development groups for students.
