Position Summary

West Chester University of Pennsylvania's Division of Student Affairs invites applicants for the Assistant Director for LGBTQA Center. The LGBTQA Center is a resource for and about lesbian, gay, bisexual, non-binary, transgender, intersex, asexual, questioning, queer, and ally members of the West Chester University community.

Reporting to the Director for the LGBTQA Center, the Assistant Director works collaboratively with the LGBTQA Center staff to support the mission and function of the LGBTQA Center. The Assistant Director provides extensive programming, outreach, and education on campus; assists students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members who access the space and services of the Center; advises student organizations; supervises student employees and volunteers; assists with administration of the Center; makes referrals, and helps maintain the office's physical space.

The largest portion of the job is the responsibility for all aspects of the LGBTQA Center's robust and comprehensive programming from development through execution. The next significant roles of the job are student leadership development and advising, oversight of the peer education program and support with institutional training, resource development and outreach, and administrative and office oversight. The Assistant Director is part of the Division of Student Affairs and is one of several diversity and inclusion practitioners on campus (i.e., within and outside of Student Affairs). The Assistant Director may be asked to stand in for the Director at some meetings.

In collaboration with the LGBTQA Center Director and staff, the primary responsibilities are as follows:

Program Development
The Assistant Director is responsible for all aspects of the LGBTQA Center's programming from inception through delivery. This includes, but is not limited to: taking care of all details for each event (i.e. room reservations, contacting presenters, ordering food, setting up and cleaning up after events, negotiating with vendors/agents regarding contracts and payments, etc.), developing publicity and program materials, evaluation of programs, assist the director in conducting programmatic need assessments and strategic planning. This includes working collaboratively with the director to develop the programming for the year, working with colleagues across campus and community partners on joint programmatic initiatives, and physically creating a printed and online calendar each semester.

Administration and Office Oversight
The Assistant Director supervises the Graduate Assistant and in conjunction, is responsible for creating a welcoming atmosphere for those who come to the Center, advising people on resources and Center programs. The Assistant Director hires student employees and volunteers, trains them regarding office policies and procedures, and supervises through delegating tasks and project oversight. The Assistant Director also handles additional duties as assigned.

Student Leadership Development
The Assistant Director offers advisement to all LGBTQA and Center affiliated groups. The Assistant Director works with student leaders on programming and program advisement. This includes cosponsored and annual events. Leadership development through organized meetings and retreats are part of this job responsibility.

Peer Education Program & Training
The Assistant Director will oversee all aspects of the peer education program from recruitment and advising to training and delivery of this student-led educational program. In addition, the Assistant Director will work with the Director to develop and deliver new trainings for offices and colleagues across campus.

Outreach & Resource Development
The Assistant Director collaborates with the Graduate Assistant around outreach. The Assistant Director maintains outreach to students via in person meetings and the Center's social media sites. In addition, with support from the Administrative Assistant, the Assistant Director will provide oversight of the development and updating of the office web site and other online resources. The Assistant Director oversees resource development for programs, training and general use and production of office publications.


Minimum Qualifications
Master degree with at least 3-5 years of related professional experience
Strong knowledge and understanding of lesbian, gay, bisexual, non-binary, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual content and demonstrated experience working with people with marginalized genders and sexualities
Direct involvement with providing services to the LGBTQA community within a higher education environment, including program planning, facilitation of workshops, advocacy, and assessment of student learning/outcomes
Experience with the outcomes/goals of social justice work, advising campus student organizations, and the ability to manage multiple priorities
Demonstrated ability and strong interpersonal skills to work in a multicultural, social justice-oriented office with individuals and groups with a wide array of backgrounds, identities, life experiences and communication styles
Experience developing, presenting and facilitating LGBTQA workshops and trainings
Ability to take initiative, problem solve and work independently with good judgment about when to seek direction
Ability to juggle many different projects simultaneously, with consistent accuracy, follow-through, and timely completion of projects
Demonstrated experience in the creation and implementation of successful, innovative, educational programming and training
Ability to consistently work some evenings and weekends for programming outside of regular business hours
Previous experience with student leadership development and advising student organizations
Previous experience supervising student staff and volunteers
Understanding of Social Media/web design experience could be beneficial
Preferred Qualifications
Master Degree in college student personnel, higher education administration, social work, counseling, sexuality and gender studies, or other related field with 5-7 years of related professional experience
Professional experience working with multicultural and social justice education, including experience in the areas of race, ethnicity, nationality, class, disability, religion, sexuality, and gender
Considerable experience with public speaking, leading training sessions, and presenting to diverse audiences
Previous experience and skill providing interpersonal advising and group facilitation
Experience with online outreach and current technology

Special Instructions
Starting salary is $47,061. Excellent benefits package including tuition fee waiver for self and dependents. Applicants must successfully complete interview process to be considered as a finalist. Anticipated start date for this position is March 2018.
