Job summary:
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Resource Center (LGBTRC) resides in the Center for Intercultural Dialogue, located in 626 Thurston Ave. The center’s strives to reach out to the entire campus community to promote programs that cross the boundaries of identity and inclusion in Cornell’s diverse student community. This facility functions as an intercultural center, bringing together students from program houses, diversity and social justice related student organizations, the other cultural centers across campus, and partnering with college-specific programs.

The Associate Dean of Students and Director of the LGBTRC reports to the Senior Associate Dean of Students in the diversity and inclusion portfolio of the Dean of Students office. The Associate Dean of Students main role is to provide advocacy, vision, leadership, and coordination for initiatives designed to inspire/facilitate/create a stronger sense of community among Cornell’s increasingly diverse student body.

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Resource Center (LGBTRC) is a unit within the Office of the Dean of Students, within the Division of Student and Campus Life. The mission of the LGBTRC is to coordinate the efforts of the Cornell University community to ensure the inclusion and visibility of all lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender undergraduate and graduate/ professional students, staff, and faculty. The Resource Center affirms lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender identities and lives through collaboration with the campus and Ithaca community.

Specific responsibilities include:
  • Supervise the Assistant Director for the Center, the Graduate Interns, and the undergraduate student staff.
  • Advise individuals and groups, address important community issues and promote events to celebrate, socialize and develop a healthy, fun and nurturing community for those who identify as: lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, same-gender-loving, queer, questioning, allies, and other diverse gender and sexual identities.
  • Direct all administrative, budgetary, and programming activities of the LGBTRC and oversee the budgeting and expenditures of byline funding granted to Haven: The LGBTQ+ Student Union.
  • Develop, deliver and coordinate programs and services to provide outreach, support, advocacy and community building for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) undergraduate and graduate students, staff, faculty, and their allies.
  • Establish, maintain and build connections with relevant student, staff, and faculty programs and offices at Cornell and the broader Ithaca community.
  • Consult and collaborate with colleagues and offices campus-wide serving the LGBTQ community, as part of university initiatives, and to assess and respond to community needs.
  • Develop and present programs and workshops, ranging from small groups to large events on LGBTQ-specific topics, as well as on general sexuality issues and other issues relevant to well-being and effecting campus climate..
  • Oversee Haven, the LGBTQ+ student union, a peer-led LGBTQ umbrella student organization that, through its groups (20+), organizes small and large events that focus on educational, social, and cultural outreach.
  • Partner with the Dean of Students, and Student and Campus Life Assistant Director of Donor Relations and the Director of Diversity Alumni Programs to develop the resources for, and in particular alumni/ae support for the Resource Center.
  • Offer crisis management and mental health support to LGBTQ students that experience a crisis during their collegiate experience at Cornell.

Required Qualifications:
Master’s Degree in higher education, student affairs, or related field; 3-5 years of experience in LGBTQ studies, diversity education, student development, cross-cultural communication, human relations, counseling or related field. Depth and breadth of knowledge about the LGBTQ+ student community and the emerging trends for this community in higher education. Experience supervising staff, either professional or graduate level. Experience managing at least one budget.

Preferred Qualifications:
Doctorate in higher education, student affairs, or a related field. 7 years of experience in higher education, with an emphasis in student affairs leadership. Experience supervising professional staff, graduate interns, and student leaders. Experience managing multiple budgets, including stewarding gift funds.
