The LGBTQIA+ Program Coordinator is a member of the Intercultural Center team and will assist in providing leadership for initiatives and support services that enhance the student experience and promote the personal development and academic success of undergraduate lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex and asexual student at Whitman College. While the position prioritizes work with students, the Coordinator also supports and advocates for LGBTQIA+ staff and faculty.

Under the general direction of the Interfaith Chaplain, the LGBTQIA+ Program Coordinator will collaborate with other offices to develop programs that enhance the quality of student-life, promote diversity and inclusion, and respond to student concerns. The LGBTQIA+ Program Coordinator is an advocate for the Whitman LGBTQIA+ community and will contribute to efforts to promote the development of cultural competence on the part of members of the campus community. The LGBTQIA+ Program Coordinator is expected to be available to work outside of regular business hours, for evening and weekend events, or other critical times.

1. Create a safe environment in which to serve as a referral source and provide consultation as needed to undergraduate students regarding LGBTQIA+ topics and/or issues.
2. Hire, train, and supervise student interns working with PRISM (LGBTQIA+ student-led organization), and support programming efforts; work with students on budget management.
3. Recommend and participate in the development of college policies and procedures for LGBTQIA+ students.
4. Provide education and training as needed (Safe Zone, departmental sensitivity, etc.).
5. Provide support and collaborate with student-run organizations working on issues of gender, consent, sexuality, and sexual violence (e.g. Feminists Advocating Change & Empowerment) by attending meetings and programs presented by the groups, and by guiding groups through the event planning and implementation process.
6. Build strategic and collaborative partnerships with college departments and programs in support of students in issues related to gender, consent, sexual orientation, sexuality, and sexual violence (including Residence Life & Housing, Student Health, Counseling Center, Greek Life, etc).
7. Participate in professional development and growth opportunities in order to maintain current knowledge of student development and student learning research, theory and practice that best serve the needs of LGBT students.
8. Ensure that the college is listed and participating in national groups and organizations for LGBTQIA+ resources.
9. Participate in community-based groups who are doing work in related areas (Blue Mountain Heart to Heart, Blue Mountain Gender Alliance, Community Pride, etc.).
10. Assist the Office of the Provost by meeting with potential faculty hires who are interested in learning more about LGBTQIA+ issues on campus.
11. Assist with alumni relations within the LGBTQIA+ community.
12. Assist with ongoing department learning outcomes development and assessment processes; incorporate learning outcomes into department trainings, resources, and advising.
13. Assist with the maintenance of departmental webpages and social media accounts.
14. Assist as needed in planning and implementing Intercultural Center events; attend weekly meetings and trainings as needed.
15. Serve on college committees as needed, as well as complete other duties as assigned.

Individuals must be able to explain and/or demonstrate that they possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to safely perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

1. Bachelor’s degree required.
2. Familiarity with sexual orientation, gender identity, and college student learning and development theories.
3. Experience working with LGBTQIA+ students in a college environment.
4. Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to issues related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression and their intersections with gender, race, class, ability, and other identities.
5. Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community, with faculty, staff, and students.
6. Effective oral and written communication skills.
7. Ability to take initiative for projects and development of services.
8. Ability to collaborate and work successfully in a team environment.
9. Organizational, supervisory, budgeting, advising, and leadership training skills required.
10. Ability to plan and implement events, as well as teaching student interns to implement these events.
11. Willingness to regularly work night and weekend hours in support of students.
