The Office for Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Connecticut seeks a Director (UCP 9/Center Director) of the Rainbow Center; the University’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex and Asexuality (LGBTQIA+) resource center. The Director will serve as a leader in inclusionary efforts as well as an expert advisor on LGBTQIA+ issues. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion, this position is charged with planning, organizing, and administering programs designed to provide awareness and understanding of LGBTQIA+ issues, social support for student constituents, and assistance in achieving their professional, educational, and personal goals.

Since its founding 19 years ago, the Rainbow Center has become nationally recognized for its exceptional advocacy and support for the University’s LGBTQIA+ community. The Rainbow Center provides education, information, and advocacy services to create and maintain an open, safe, and inclusive environment for members of the UConn community. UConn is one of the nation’s top 20 public universities, is the state’s flagship institution of higher education and includes a main campus in Storrs, CT, four regional campuses, and a Law School campus.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Directs the day-to-day operation of the Rainbow Center.
  2. Plans, develops, implements and evaluates the effectiveness of University-wide programs and services for LGBTQIA+ community.
  3. Serves as primary contact for students, faculty, and staff concerning LGBTQIA+ matters.
  4. Provides crisis intervention and referrals for students as required.
  5. Serves as a liaison to University leadership regarding sensitive matters related to LGBTQIA+.
  6. Keeps abreast of changes and developments in strategies to support the LGBTQIA+ community.
  7. Works collaboratively with other Cultural Center Directors addressing matters of cultural unity/inclusion.
  8. Develops and monitors the departmental budget.
  9. Engages in development activities and supports alumni activities.
  10. Leads the Center’s advisory council.
  11. Maintains LGBTQIA+ resource library material.
  12. Develops LGBTQIA+ educational/learning materials, orientation workshops, programs, and activities.
  13. Directs the activities of professional staff; determines staffing needs; selects, evaluates, and supervises staff; determines work assignments and work schedules.
  14. Represents the Chief Diversity Officer on various University committees and boards on LGBTQIA+ matters.
  15. Represents UConn’s LGBTQIA+ efforts to the public and work to increase awareness of the needs, issues, and concerns.
  16. Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Master’s degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Minimum of two years related experience, including experience in administration and program planning for LGBTQIA+ or like community organizations.
  3. Working knowledge of available post-secondary funding opportunities for LGBTQIA+ initiatives, including all state and federal educational benefits.
  4. Demonstrated experience dealing with crisis management.
  5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to communicate effectively to students, university administrators, and governmental authorities.
  6. Excellent problem solving and organizational skills.
  7. Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  8. Demonstrated supervisory experience and ability.
  9. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain collaborative and cooperative relationships within complex organizations and with outside organizations.
  10. Demonstrated ability to work with individuals and groups from diverse populations, and to foster an environment of inclusion and acceptance.
  11. Willingness to work irregular hours including evenings and weekends.
  12. Strong assessment background.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Master’s or Terminal Degree.
  2. Prior or current LGBTQIA+ assignment or leadership role.
  3. Experience working in higher education settings, or with higher education institutions.
  4. Knowledge of Student Development Theory, Racial and Ethnic Identity Development, Feminist, Queer and Transnationalism Theory.
  5. Knowledge of and ability to interpret federal and state statutes, policies, and procedures relevant to LGBTQIA+ communities, and to solve problems and communicate about complex issues related to them.
  6. Five years’ post-masters experience in Multicultural/Diversity Affairs in university setting.
  7. Experience working with multicultural/diverse student populations.
  8. Proven effectiveness in human relations including the ability to relate well with all segments of campus.
