Call to Action: The Consortium Launches the Center Closures Project

New York, New York – The Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals represents a collective of college and university gender and sexuality resource practitioners, as well as faculty and staff working to serve and support LGBTQ+ populations on their campuses. In recent years, an onslaught of anti-DEI and anti-LGBTQ+ legislation has forced the closure of gender and sexuality centers, the elimination of LGBTQ+ positions, and the end of critical programs that celebrate, affirm, and support LGBTQ+ students. Today, out of nearly 4,000 colleges and universities in the U.S., only 300 have GSCs and that number is dwindling.

The Center Closures Project seeks to document and preserve the history of these centers, archive materials of centers that have closed or are at risk, and support the invaluable work of GSCs during this time. As a first step, the Consortium is working to capture these losses and assess the current status of centers across the United States through the Center Closures Tracking Survey.

Our histories are being erased. We refuse to let it happen. If you are/were affiliated with a GSC, we encourage you to complete the survey whether the center has closed, will be closing, or is anticipated to remain open, and to share this with your networks. Questions can be directed to the Consortium’s Community & Advocacy Collective at [email protected]
