Dear Consortium Members,
My name is John Lynch, and I am a business professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). I'm also a former Student Affairs professional, having worked in Res Life and Greek Life for 8 years at several schools.
I'm writing to you about a research study I'm conducting about how lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) and heterosexual colleagues interact in the workplace, with a specific focus on allies and their behaviors. The study has implications for safe space programming and other efforts to make campuses (and organizations, in general) a welcoming environment for members of the LGBTQ community and other groups.
Right now we're in the process of partnering with college campuses to recruit participants. We already did our first phase of data collection with several colleges in the Chicago area. In exchange for helping us advertise the study, those school are obtaining reports specific to their campuses that include experiences and perceptions of faculty, staff, students, and other community members. We feel like those partnerships were very beneficial for all involved, and we would love to include more schools now for our second phase of research.
A couple of quick details: this study would be FREE for your school. We have a special grant that covers the costs. My colleagues and I will do the majority of the heavy-lifting in terms of tailoring our survey for your campus and analyzing the data. The majority of our survey questions are pre-determined, but we are happy to add a few that are specific to your interests. Lastly, this study is already IRB approved here at UIC, but we would need to consult with your campus about any extra procedures about collecting data there.
Speaking as a former student affairs person, I think this could provide you with a lot of useful assessment data. In addition to contributing to knowledge about the LGBTQ community, we want our partners to have actionable data that they can use.
