The Diversity and Inclusion portfolio is casting a new vision to develop and implement an intersectional programming model that engages our students in new and innovative ways. As a unit within the Dean of Students office we share a dedication to student identity development, student support, and advocacy. We are a growing portfolio recently adding staff members to support undocumented/DACA and military veteran students as well as recruiting for multiple Director and Assistant Director positions, deepening our holistic commitment to marginalized and underserved student communities and the multiple identities they hold.
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Resource Center (LGBTRC) is a unit within the Office of the Dean of Students, within the Division of Student and Campus Life. The mission of the LGBTRC is to coordinate the efforts of the Cornell University community to ensure the inclusion and visibility of all lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender undergraduate and graduate/ professional students, staff, and faculty. The Resource Center affirms lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender identities and lives through collaboration with the campus and Ithaca community.
The Division of Student and Campus Life (SCL) and the Office of the Dean of Students at Cornell is seeking a student-focused and dedicated Assistant Director to support our Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community. This 12-month position of Assistant Director is responsible for providing support to students and developing and implementing LGBT programs, projects, and outreach on campus. The position is dedicated to serving and fostering a community of support and advocacy and will meet the needs of our student community by honoring the academic and co-curricular schedules of our students. The Assistant Director reports to the Associate Dean of Students & Director of the LGBT Resource Center. The position should anticipate supporting student groups during non-traditional business hours including evenings and weekends.
The Assistant Director will focus on and develop the following areas:

Supervision
Program Support
This position is designated as 2-year renewable term positions extendable for up to an additional 3-year term for a total maximum of 5 years.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree Required. Master’s degree preferred in higher education, student affairs, or related field
2-4 years of experience with LGBTQ+ populations required.
Experience in LGBTQ studies, diversity education, student development, cross-cultural communication, human relations, counseling or related field
Understanding of sexual orientation and gender identity-related issues, trends, and needs, especially pertaining to college students
Experience effecting change from within systems: ability to build relationships and maintain trust, to assess and balance the needs of various stakeholders, and to identify and advocate for achievable solutions
Experience in working with individuals and groups with a wide array of identity and life experiences, including gender, sexuality, class, race/ethnicity, disability, culture, religion, sexual violence, etc.
Ability to take initiative, work and think independently, and willingness to contribute to a team-oriented work environment.
Strong oral, written, and presentation skills: ability to convey complex concepts and to communicate with students, faculty, staff and community members in a manner that promotes dialogue and understanding
Ability to foster a supportive and student-centered environment
Ability to advise students, showing good judgment about when to make referrals, set boundaries, and equip students with skills and strategies to engage in self-advocacy
Ability to identify and proactively respond to problems or emerging student needs
