Dear Consortium Members,

I am a doctoral candidate in the EdD program with emphasis in nursing education, at Bryan College of Health Sciences. I am requesting your support with recruitment for my doctoral research with the working title, “The Lived Experiences of Trans Persons as Students in Prelicensure Nursing Programs.” The purpose of this phenomenological study is to explore the lived student experiences of trans persons who have been enrolled in nursing programs. Specifically, participants need to meet the following criteria:
  • age 19 or older
  • Currently self-identify as trans
  • Also self-identified as trans while enrolled in any type of U.S. prelicensure nursing program, including practical/vocational nursing, RN diploma, associate, or baccalaureate (bachelor) degree nursing programs.
  • Enrolled in the nursing program for at least one academic term any time between the years 2014-2019, including at least one clinical course.

As the nursing profession aims to improve culturally congruent healthcare for trans patients, and recognizes the need to diversify the nursing workforce, this research is foundational to advancing supportive learning environments for trans students in a historically cisfemale-dominant nursing profession.

The study has been fully approved by the federally-registered Institutional Review Board at Bryan College of Health Sciences and assigned the IRB Number #1905-003. The IRB’s website is https://www.bryanhealthcollege.edu/bcohs/about/irb/

Regardless of whether your institution offers nursing degrees (because participants need not be currently enrolled in a nursing program), would you please post/distribute the attached recruitment flyer in a location conducive to capturing attention of your campus community members? If you would prefer for me to mail colored copies of the flyer, please contact me directly. Data collection begins immediately and concludes by October 1, 2019.

Thank you for supporting this much-needed research.

Sincerely,

Jenna Dubas, MSN, RN (she/her/hers)
