Position Information

Position Title:
Student Services Specialist

Required Minimum Quals
:
Bachelor's degree and 2 years of related experience; OR a Master's degree and related experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience serving student populations with a focus on sexuality and gender.
  • Experience focused on sexual identity, gender identity, and social justice theory applicable to the current needs and issues facing college student populations.
  • Master’s degree in Women’s and/or Gender Studies, Sociology, Higher Education, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating workshops and/or presentations for students, faculty, staff, and/or community members. Experience working with students in a higher education environment.
  • Experience conducting programs inclusive of community intersections and student identity.
  • Experience working with complex/challenging student situations.

Job Description:

The Student Services Specialist, along with the staff of the Center for LGBTQIA+Student Success, provides support, education, advocacy, and visibility through programs, services, resources, and referrals with a focus on sexual identity, gender identity, and gender expression for the Iowa State University student community. The Student Services Specialist will report to the Director of the Center for LGBTQIA+Student Success. Responsibilities include assisting with development, implementation, management, and assessment of sexuality and gender programs including the Speakers Bureau Program, Thrive Leadership Program, and the Center Squad.

The specialist will assist the Director in enhancing and sustaining an extensive network of relationships with students, organizations, staff, faculty, and community members. In collaboration with the Director, the Student Services Specialist will enhance education and visibility initiatives to foster an equitable environment for all students, inclusive of sexual identity, gender identity, and gender expression. The candidate will be able to work evenings and weekends as needed.

The successful candidate will have strong organizational skills; will understand the intricacies of LGBTQIA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, and asexual) programming and student experiences; and will possess the ability to operate in a fast paced, highly fluid, independent collegiate environment. Although in-dependency is important in development and design of programs and events, the person in this role will be part of a highly collaborative team and will need to contribute as a team member toward Center goals and objectives. The person in this role must efficiently and effectively utilize technology and computer applications for daily programmatic, student service, and assessment initiatives.
