Job Summary

The LGBTQ+ Center Director focuses on leadership within the scope of diversity, encourages awareness and respect for all cultures, and supports and maintains the overall mission of Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). The director creates and maintains a safe space for all students by providing the resources and support necessary to ensure the success of LGBTQ+ students. The director serves as an advocate for students (occasionally staff and faculty) identifying as LGBTQ+ by offering educational and social programming aimed at personal development and empowerment, retention and success of students as well as serving to connect students with campus and community resources. The director serves as a consultant to campus units, departments and leaders committed to student success, especially that of LGBTQ+ students.

The LGBTQ+ Director develops and coordinates training programs on sexual orientation and gender identity; provides assistance and advising to students, families and student organizations. Day-to-day responsibilities include providing leadership in the area of student learning and development; strategic planning for the unit; and developing trainings and workshops designed to inform and educate the campus community about LGBTQ+ issues and concerns contributing to improved understanding, interpersonal relationships and campus climate.

The LGBTQ+ Center Director works closely with the Directors of the Multicultural Center and Adaptive Educational Services on programming, trainings and professional development workshops for students, staff and faculty on intersectionality, as well as the community, works diligently to ensure IUPUI is a “safe space/zone” for all LGBTQ+ students, staff and faculty by providing learning and informational programs that address the unique and specific needs of LGBTQ+ identified students, staff and faculty. The LGBTQ+ Director works collaboratively with various campus leaders, identifying opportunities leading to the empowerment of LGBTQ+ students including mentoring, internships, research opportunities, Alternative Spring Break, relevant conference attendance and presentations.
Required Qualifications

REQUIRED: Master’s Degree, plus 4 years of experience working with LGBTQ+ populations.

Considerable knowledge regarding intersections of identity, social justice and the concerns and issues of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people. Demonstrated experience in advocacy, crisis management, programming and planning. Demonstrated commitment to collaboration, team building, diversity and equity.
Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. in higher education, women and gender studies, counseling, queer studies, social work, sociology or a related field.

Experience working with LGBTQ+ populations in higher education, and experience with strategic planning.
