Recommendations for Supporting Trans and Queer Students of Color

Student affairs (SA) professionals have a unique opportunity to work directly with trans and queer students of color (TQSOC) on campuses across the United States. Most of this work is concentrated in cultural centers, which include race-specific resource centers, LGBTQ+ resource centers, and multicultural resource enters. Due to nationwide calls for accountability and the growing need to better serve TQSOC, we the committee have decided to combine our efforts and create guiding suggestions for campus partners to use when doing the work of supporting TQSOC. In this document we will discuss the historical context of cultural centers and LGBTQ+ centers on college campuses. Too few of us know these histories, which can prove a barrier to collaboration. The first section will also explore other barriers to collaboration including a lack of awareness around race/racism/whiteness in LGBTQ+ spaces, as well as a lack of awareness around sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression (SOGIE) in multicultural center spaces. This document also contains suggestions for SA professionals to incorporate into their departments. We invite you to spend some time reflecting upon the questions for further consideration that are found in each section.

LGBT2 Supervision Tips

The LGBT2 Supervision Tips document was created by the Consortium’s LGBT2 Constituency Committee to support LGBT2s and their supervisors in initiating, developing, and maintaining productive supervisory relationships. These tips were formed using information generated by the LGBT2 Supervision Tips Survey released in summer 2014. LGBT2s and their supervisors can use this document as a guide for conversations or as a reference tool in ways that best fit the unique supervisory relationship between these practitioners.

Join the members of the Consortium in the discussion! For more information about these tips, please connect with the LGBT2 Constituency Committee (LGBT2CC) by emailing [email protected]!

ICE and Creating Change 2016

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 14th, 2016

New York, N.Y. -  We, The Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals, were disappointed to learn that the Creating Change conference initially allowed ICE to enter the conference space as an attendee and presenter.  For many of us, this space has been held as sacred and inclusive, but ICE's inclusion in the conference has shown us otherwise.  The Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals stands in solidarity with undocumented communities and attendees at this conference, including the students and staff that we bring to our conference and support on our campuses.

We support the demands of Familia: Trans Queer Liberation Movement as presented to the National LGBTQ Task Force (http://familiatqlm.org/iceoutofcc/)

  • Include a “Fighting Against Deportations” plenary with trans immigrant leaders;

  • Make space available on the agenda to include more LGBTQ immigrant rights workshops; and,

  • Ensure all LGBTQ undocumented immigrant attendees are supported financially throughout the conference (meals, lodging, registration, travel, etc).

We also encourage our membership to attend UndocuPeers: Liberating Campus Climate for LGBTQ Immigrant Youth #UndocuTrack (Workshop Session 8 · All Audiences)

The combined vision and mission of the Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals is to achieve higher education environments in which lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students, faculty, staff, administrators, and alumni have equity in every respect. Our goals are to support colleagues and develop curriculum to professionally enhance this work; to seek climate improvement on campuses; and to advocate for policy change, program development, and establishment of LGBT Offices/Centers. The American College Health Association (ACHA), Coalition of Allies for LGBT Health, and the Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals release Trans-Inclusive College Health Programs Recommendations

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

October, 2015

New York, N.Y. As college health programs work to support the overall goals of their institutions, providing trans-inclusive healthcare will enhance academic success for transgender students and comply with Title IX guidelines requiring educational institutions to not discriminate on the basis of gender identity in the provision of services. Likewise, under the Affordable Care Act, institutions are increasing emphasis on non-discrimination in healthcare on the basis of gender identity. The following document details recommendations designed to create climates and environments in college health that are inclusive and affirming of transgender, gender nonconforming, genderqueer, and similarly self-identified students. Students’ gender expressions span a wide spectrum. The following recommendations can help mitigate barriers that trans students face when accessing mental health, physical health and preventative services on campus. The Consortium is grateful to partner with ACHA to release this document.

The document can be downloaded at ACHA.

Consortium Summer 2016 Institute Proposal

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

October 10, 2015

New York, N.Y. – The Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals is seeking proposals for the Consortium Summer 2016 Institute and Board Retreat. Since 2009, the Consortium board has hosted a summer planning retreat at different campuses across the U.S. including University of Wisconsin-Madison and University at Albany-SUNY. As a benefit to the retreat site, we have also hosted a day-long summer institute for higher education professionals.

We are pleased to announce the Consortium’s invitation for proposals to host the 2016 Summer Board Retreat and Day-Long Institute! Your campus could host a professional development opportunity for your region. Since the retreat travels, we would like to take the retreat and institute to a new location where it can benefit our members.

In the 2016 Institute Proposal document, you will find descriptions of the Institute, the Retreat and the partnership between the hosting institution and the Consortium. The detailed proposal form (pgs 4 - 7 of the attachment) includes an opportunity to outline proposed dates, venue(s), logistics and much more. Consider inviting the Consortium board to your campus in Summer 2016. The deadline for proposals is Monday, November 23, 2015! What questions do you have? Please contact D.A. Dirks and Matt Bruno for questions or more information.
